Source: NWHS

National Wildlife Humane Society recently concluded the May 2010 Wildlife/Nature Photo Contest. The contest was held in the NWHS sponsored internet community, Wildlife Community Network. Congratulations Carrie C, the contest winner! Carrie's photo of a very cool insect captured people's votes and 1st place. It was not an easy win for Carrie, as all of the photos were outstanding. Lila S. came in second, and Sue S. came in third. Carrie will receive an NWHS Messenger Bag.

Thank-you to all WCN members who entered their photo in this contest, and to all members who had the very difficult job of voting. It was very close all the way to the end!

The contest photographs were compiled and included in an NWHS Contest YouTube Presentation for all to enjoy. Click the contest video link below to view. Turn your sound up to hear Heather Reazin's rendition of "Only Hope" accompanying herself on piano.

Australia to mount legal bid against Japan whaling
Source: BBC News Online

Australia has said it will begin legal action against Japan over its whaling in the Antarctic.

It will argue that the annual whaling hunt in the Southern Ocean is in violation of an international ban on commercial whaling. Japan, which kills hundreds of whales ever year, says the hunt is carried out for scientific research purposes. Critics say this is a cover for commercial whaling and that whale meat not used in research is sold for food.

The Australian government says it will lodge formal proceedings at the International Court of Justice in The Hague next week. The move comes ahead of a meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) in Morocco next month, where agreement is being sought on a new approach to whaling, which would allow commercial hunting but with strict quotas. Australian Environment Minister Peter Garrett and Attorney General Robert McClelland said in a joint statement that the move underlines their "commitment to bring to an end Japan's program of so-called scientific whaling"...

Three panthers killed in three days on U.S. 41 East

COLLIER COUNTY — Three endangered Florida panthers have been killed in the past three days along U.S. 41 East in Collier County, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reported Monday. The grisly weekend string of roadkills on the two-lane rural road prompted a warning from wildlife officials to obey speed limits in panther zones and prompted a conservation group to urge stepped up efforts to stem the death toll.

"That road, something needs to be done," said Elizabeth Fleming, Florida representative for Defenders of Wildlife. The latest panther roadkill, an 8-month-old male panther kitten, was found Sunday morning on U.S. 41 west of Manatee Road.

That kitten is not one of the kittens that biologists had been trying to find after a 5-year-old female panther was killed Saturday, about a half-mile east of San Marco Road, Conservation Commission biologist Dave Onorato said...

Pygmy elephant calf rescued in Borneo
Source: News dot Com

MALAYSIAN wildlife authorities said they rescued an endangered Borneo pygmy elephant calf that was separated from its mother and found dying in a plantation. The six-month-old elephant was weak and dehydrated when found last week after plantation workers alerted the wildlife department in eastern Sabah state, on Borneo island, its chief veterinarian Sen Nathan said.

He said the calf was lost in the plantation for at least three days before it was rescued. "A calf relies entirely on the mother and if it is not fed for that long, this would have normally killed the elephant," he said. "Its condition was bad, and it could have died from dehydration," Mr Nathan said, adding that an elephant was only capable of looking after itself after it turned three. "It refused to drink the formula milk we fed during the first 24 hours, but now it has gotten used to it and is drinking from the bottle. Its condition has stabilized and it is recovering," he added.

Pygmy elephants are unique to Borneo and form a subspecies of the Asian elephant. Males stand only about 2.5 meters tall, compared to about 3 meters for mainland Asian elephants. Authorities said the elephant species is considered endangered, with about 1500 to 2000 left on Borneo island...
